Located on beautiful, crystal clear Lower Beech Pond, water sports are an important part of the Camp program. One of the most active areas of Camp, our waterfront is operated in accordance with American Red Cross standards. Campers are encouraged to pursue the varied offerings.

Swimming

Although William Lawrence Camp's swimming program is one that is mandatory, the campers don't seem to mind much. Our zany yet instructional instruction plan helps all of the campers improve their swimming skills. A one hour class each day is devoted to swimming using the Red Cross' instructional system as our framework. Over their stay in the camp, each child will first be tested to determine the proper swimming level and then be placed in the appropriate class. Our lifeguard-trained staff, will give lessons on the crawl, the breast stroke, side stroke, both elementary and regular back stroke, and for the more advanced swimmer, the butterfly. Even if a camper is putting his face in the water for the first time, the waterfront staff will be ready to teach, and there always seems to be a little time left at the end of each day for a ride down the slide!

Water-skiing

Boys Summer Camp - Waterskiing at Waterfront

A quiet pond makes for an excellent venue to learn to ski or to refine your slalom skiing ability. Kids line up by the docks to experience the thrill of being out on the water. William Lawrence Camp has the luxury of an almost exclusive lake that isn't shared with any other organizations or recreational facilities.

Sailing

Our sailing fleet at William Lawrence has grown over the years to a sizeable number. Using a mixture of sunfish, catamarans, and dinghy-style sail boats, our campers not only learn the joy of sailing on a sunny day, but truely get to know the basics of sailing a variety of different craft. As we have one of the only motorboats on Lower Beech Pond, sailors are able to glide around open water without the constant dodging of ski boats that would exist on larger lakes like Winnepesaukee. Sailing class is a special double-length event in the mornings and during the summer we often hold regattas. So if you're looking for a great day on the lake, join us down in sailing.

Kayaking & Canoeing

Boys Summer Camp - Boating at Waterfront

William Lawrence's kayaking and canoeing program has been constructed to teach all different levels. Kayaking is a skill that may look easy, but takes a great deal of time to learn. Our instructors start with the basic strokes, and the use of the hips and the body to guide the kayak, building to the much revered eskimo role. In canoeing, campers learn the different types of strokes and then are given the chance to apply that knowledge both in camp, as well as in out-camping excursions to lakes and rivers in Northern New England. The canoeing and kayaking program gives our campers the opportunity to develop an appreciation for wilderness waters.

Fly Fishing & Fly Tying

A proud tradition of outdoor enthusiasts, fly tying and fly fishing is part of the William Lawrence outdoorsman offering. This program is broken into two parts. Part one, fly tying, instructs campers in the techniques of making the proper fly for luring their catch. Even if the camper has never been a part of this activity before, our instructors will teach all the basics. Part two, fly fishing, takes place at our waterfront, where our campers learn the delicate art of fly casting. Much like chess, it takes a moment to learn, and a lifetime to master and the experience will stay with them, long after camp is through.

Fishing

Boys Summer Camp - Fishing at WaterfrontBig bass and trout are caught regularly in Lower Beech Pond. Many campers will take a moment's respite from the thrills William Lawrence has to offer and just relax on the dock with a fishing line, waiting for that perfect catch. Many boys choose formal fishing instruction, both in spin fishing and fly fishing.
